McEfe, 75, who had a number of co-workers under the law, was extradited to the United States last year after being charged with tax fraud.
Speaking to reporters outside the prison on Friday, Janice Makafi said she wanted an “answer to this question” and asked for an in-depth investigation.
The cause of Makafi’s death is being investigated, a spokesman for the Catalan Supreme Court told CNN this week.
Janice Makafi’s lawyer, Javier Vilaba, told reporters that the client was waiting for an official autopsy and that his family had asked for a second and neutral.
“I blame the US authorities for this. As a result of these political motives. My husband is now dead,” Janice said in a statement.
Janice’s last words to me were, “I love you and I’ll call you tonight.” He will never leave this way, he will never end his life in this way.
Makafi could be extradited to the United States this week following a ruling by a three-judge panel of the Spanish National Court in Madrid. According to court documents, the decision could still be appealed to a number of judges in the same court.
Janice said on Friday that the Spanish court had ruled that his extradition was not a surprise.
Makafi had a classmate in the prison, but the man was not present at the time of his death, a prison official told CNN on condition of anonymity. The official added that the other person was doing other routine work in the prison. Asked if he had taken special surveillance in his room, the official said, “I don’t know.”
Makafe was arrested in Spain in October after being charged with tax fraud in the United States months ago. According to court documents, Between 2014 and 2018, he reportedly failed to pay taxes for four years, promoting millions of dollars in secret currency, advising on employment, participating in talks, and selling rights in his life. The amount of the loan is not specified in the lawsuit.
Spanish judges have ruled in his favor for the 2016, 2017, and 2018 tax years.
MacAfe – founder of anonymous anti-virus software, no longer cooperating – was indicted in March on special fraud and money laundering charges. The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit alleging that he and a business partner were involved in a $ 13 million conspiracy to disclose secrets to unsuspecting investors.
